1st music video deconstruction

This opening scene uses a slight panoramic close up shot in order to set the scene as to what the song is titles, that being shake it off. This implies that it is a dancing type video. The close up shot of the girl limbering up shows that she is ready to “shake it off”. The mise en scene used presents her style of dance that she does as it shows ballet style.

As the shots move on the mise en scene changes to “street” fashion implying the style of dance has changed to street dance. Also with the boom box and the group of them it shows rectifies that look. Further on it shows a guy street dancing presenting that, that is his way of “shaking it off” therefore it already gives us this idea that the song title is the way that people perceive “shaking it off” in dance in their own preferred style.

In this shot they use a mid-shot in order to present their mise en scene but it also shows that Taylor swift the person who sings the song is also in the video. Also at this stage the video is illustrative with the lyrics as it mentions moving and they are moving but in the style of their dance. The lighting is also brighter than it is in the street shots above to show that it is more clean, straight cut posh dance.

Yet again the mise en scene has changed into contemporary dance which means this video is still showing the progressions and different varieties of type of dance. In this shot the clothing worn matches the background colour and outfit colour to present that different type of dance to show that contemporary dance is matching.

Another mise en scene change to keep the flow of dance variety change, the outfits and background are cleverly put together to present maybe a more future looking dance as they are more costumes than outfits.

The main change in this video is when there is a group of “normal” people who are in normal clothes to show another change in mise en scene. This presents that dance is open to everyone and everyone can “shake it off”. I feel that it is a way to make people feel that anyone can get into dance no matter who you are. The bright lighting and the grouping of the people shows that dance brings everyone together. This is able to be shown by using a long shot.
